Geelong Animal Emergency: Reviews
Negative experience: Let me start this off with, I know vets try there hardest. We came in with my cat that was very unwell and needed to be put down. We also called up prior to our arrival to let them know. As i walked in with my convulsing excruciating cat wrapped in a towel they told us they would be a minute. Withthin the next half an hour i had seen two more vets come in for night shift and 2 vets already there helping one other family with there animal. Within that half an hour my cat seizured and died in my lap in the waiting room. I was destroyed i wanted to at least get her some pain medication to make her more comfortable. My heart is broken the way she had to go. Shame on the emergency vets. All they said is i’m so sorry we thought she wasn’t that bad as they dragged her back legs into a plastic bag and gave her back to us. I’ll forever be traumatised and heart broken
Fantastic experience: Jen was so knowledgeable and kind to my GSP Winston and I, following him being bitten in a dog attack. She was patient and had a high level of expertise when advising and providing treatment. I was grateful for that care and my dog actually enjoyed the vet, despite the attack trauma! We both left reassured and happy. Thank you for your friendliness, patience and compassion, Jen. We appreciate you. Erica and Winston
Fantastic experience: Our 2 westies had been vomiting and diorreah for 3 days . As it was a Sunday we made the decision to drive in on a dark and rainy night to Geelong Emergency Hospital. They were both given a thorough examination by Rob , 2 Cerenia vaccinations , A tube of Protecin and 10 anti nausea wafers $621 . While this was (in my opinion based on previous vet consultations & medication for gastroenteritis) quite expensive, at least they are both now resting and not presenting unwell due to the treatment & care provided. We understand after hours would be ore expensive but it would be better for the public confidence of the clinic if their prices were less over inflated.
Negative experience: Did not feel cared for by the vet. We brought our 1 year old cat in with a urine blockage, she explained what was happening but threw the price of $3000 in there with no care They have bearly any options for payment plans Basically said if you can’t pay you’ll have to do euthanasia. We made the heart breaking decision and even when we were both in physical distress the contestant tally of prices was heartless. When we told her our choice she just said “yep” and even then mentioned to her him cremated was $80 while I was crying Don’t work industry the industry if you have no compassion The only person that showed any care or empathy was the receptionist Would not recommend felt like all they cared about was money over a sick animal.
Fantastic experience: I cannot speak highly enough of the compassionate, caring, and professional vet care provided by John. He was very responsive and helpful in a time of need. We felt confident in the treatment he provided to our pet, and trusted his guidance upon discharge. Would highly recommend this wonderful clinic to anyone.
Hi Kirby, thanks for the great review of our service at Geelong Animal Emergency. We are really pleased we could be of assistance. The GAE team
Fantastic experience: Everyone there was kind and compassionate during a very stressful and traumatic experience for us and our cat. Unfortunately she didn’t improve and we brought her in to be put asleep. The staff including John & Fiona? (Apologies bad with names) were amazing kind and caring. There were other staff that treated us very well for which I can’t remember their names. Thank you!
Hi Caleb, thanks very much for your kind words at this difficult time and please accept our condolences. The GAE team
Negative experience: Unfortunately I had to take my pet in recently. Staff are friendly, I won't fault that and I do understand they are under the pump there. However I was forgotten about after I had already had consultation with vet, and was awaiting blood test results just to confirm meds. Over an hour later I asked about it and promotly got given the meds. The instructions sticker for one of them is stuck on the bottle in an odd ,folded way, not on the box, which makes it difficult to read. My pet keeps licking her abscess. I was not given a collar to prevent that. The wound now looks even worse. I am very stressed about it all. After paying top public holiday dollar, which I had prepared myself for, I do not feel the treatment was sufficient and am reluctant to take her back.
Fantastic experience: Every time I’ve been to this clinic, I found all the staff to be very kind and caring towards animals. Always very helpful And patient with me when I ring up multiple times in one night asking questions about my unwell pet.
Fantastic experience: I want to say a huge thankyou to the staff at Geelong Animal Emergency last night. I arrived late in the night with my incredibly distressed lab, knowing that I would likely not be bringing her home. The staff were so incredibly kind, caring and sensitive to my girl and myself from the moment I arrived to when she passed. Knowing that I had to tell my children when they woke up, the nurse took paw prints and cuts of her hair so that I could bring part of her home with me for them. I am so grateful for the respect, dignity and caring they showed her during the euthenising process.
Hi CJ, we are really sorry for your loss, but pleased we could assist at this difficult time. The GAE team.
Fantastic experience: Amazing service, caring friendly staff and such a calm environment where I thought my cat was going to go crazy while being examined but she was the calmest I’ve ever seen her in such a different environment with strangers. Thanks team ShelleyCat
Hi PC, we are really pleased we could assist. The GAE team.
Negative experience: Go to Geelong Animal Recovery in Newtown Geelong. Half the price and better outcome. If you have Vetpay, Geelong Animal Emergency ripped off $1400 of my vetpay for 5 hours and there quotes changed everytime. It should of been around $600 to $750 as quoted by Geelong Recovery hospital. Do not believe Geelong Animal Emergency with there quotes, i was quoted overnight would be $1200 and they couldn't explain why 5 hours was $1400. I had been told xrays were done then at another clinic a vet looked into the account to examine the prognosis and found no xrays were ever done. I have been told by many other clients they had been ripped off severely by the owner of this clinic by Thousands. It is a privately run clinic.. with a clever name.. Best to go to the new hospital the Geelong Recovery centre in Newcomb that is actually a hospital with alot more staff, better facilities, with better care of your pets and better advice. Also Leopold vet hospital thats excellent too and the doctors very clever, gives pension discounts as well. I was very impressed. Keep away from All Bellarine Clinics, service appalling and also over charge. Ive done a test run with all of them with my sick dog and the more I've talked the more I've heard other locals have had bad experiences with Bellarine and Geelong Animal Hospital as well.
Fantastic experience: Thank you very much for seeing my ferret Sega on Sunday 4th Jan 26. Thank you for your honest, professional care and dealing a very worried ferret mum. Happy to report that Sega is back to his old demanding, mischevious self and is eating well again.
Hi Peta, thanks for the update. Great to hear that Sega is back to normal. The GAE team.
Fantastic experience: The nurse and vet that looked after our golden retriever this evening are incredible! We are so grateful for their kindness and compassion. I highly recommend this service. Thank you again!
Fantastic experience: A huge thank you to the team at Geelong Emergency Vet for the exceptional care and compassion shown to our dog, Benji, following his seizures. Being such a stressful situation, especially the day before Christmas, we were incredibly grateful for the calm, professional and genuinely kind approach from everyone involved. To all the veterinarians Dr Rachael Saunders, Dr Dora Tan and Dr Natalka Kohut were absolutely fantastic. Their care, communication and empathy made a very difficult time much easier to navigate. We felt Benji was truly in the best hands. Thank you again for everything you do
Negative experience: My experience was not as wonderful as others. It was during Covid, so owners were outside. They kept telling me he was in with a vet for over an hour. I eventually saw a line up of pet carriers, & there he was! They said they couldn’t find anything wrong, he died 2 days later
Fantastic experience: I had such a great experience. The staff were so lovely, gentle, and genuinely caring with my cat. They took the time to explain everything and made sure he was comfortable the whole way through. I’m really grateful for how well they looked after him.
Fantastic experience: We have two dogs who have both experienced anaphylactic reactions and were treated by Geelong Animal Emergency. On both occasions, the staff were supportive, kind, and ensured our fur babies received the best possible care. I’m incredibly grateful to have access to a veterinary service outside of regular business hours that consistently provides exceptional care. A huge thank you to the entire team at GAE!
Hi MJ, we are really pleased we can are there to help when you need us. These events tend to happen at the most inconvenient times! The GAE team.
Fantastic experience: I took an elderly friend, with her German shepherd, to the clinic as we thought the dog had a bone stuck in its mouth. Thankfully there weren’t too many people in the waiting area and we were seen within half hour. Lovely vet (Leah) returned with Bess, having removed the bone from the root of Bess’s mouth with a small pair of forceps. Leah could not have been kinder or more caring towards both patient and owner. Thanks so much, Bess’s owner was so relieved!
Hi Paul, we are so pleased we could be of assistance. Stuck bones can be very stressful. The GAE team
Fantastic experience: Can’t thank the team at GAE enough. Brought my much loved and very sick dog in at 5.30am on a public holiday, afraid that she had ingested poison. The staff and Dr Dora couldn’t have been more attentive or caring, and gave her a through exam and treatment outside normal hours. I strongly believe they saved her life. Yes it is expensive - that’s to be expected for a high quality 24hr emergency service. Thank you GAE!
Fantastic experience: I don’t know how my family got so unlucky, but we had two unrelated medical emergencies a week apart. Unfortunately the first one resulted in our 9 year old kitty, Dexter, being euthanised and the second was our 6 year old Pup, August, needing surgery. Prior to these events we had never attended this vet. On the night of Dexters death the vet and nurses were absolutely amazing. They let me be present in Dexter’s care and were incredibly empathetic to him and I. My respect for veterinary staff grew immensely that night as I saw first hand the vicarious trauma they’re exposed to. As for August, we had multiple visits over a week(ish) both here and at his regular vet. Once there was confirmation of his condition, the specialist Vet remained onsite well past his finish time to perform August’s surgery. They kept us informed every step of the way and were great with his recovery. We felt as though they truely cared about the comfort and welfare of our fur-babies, they answered every one of our stupid questions, and were incredibly kind during every encounter. I highly recommend this emergency vet and would attend again if needed.
Hi Ash, thanks for very kind words. We are so pleased we could help with August, and please accept our sympathy for the loss of Dexter. The GAE team.
Negative experience: The most horrible clinic They will take all the money and do nothing for your animal. Even though we didn't need a consultation because we had already paid for it at the previous clinic, they charged us $220 and an extra just for painkillers, we paid more than $400. Horrible service, we waited more than 40 minutes, in the end they couldn't help us with anything except painkillers and asked for $3,000 for treatment. And even then with uncertainty that they would be able to help. DO NOT WEST YOU TIME AND MONEY FOR USLESS VEYERINARIAN! THEY ONLY TAKE MONEY AND DON'T HELP FOR PET!
Fantastic experience: Compassionate and outstanding. Cannot thank them enough
Negative experience: Money, Power, and greed, all delivered in a soft voice. They prey on you like raptors, closing in and getting as much money as possible. Be wary as they are linked in with Eden hills private crematorium that they never tell you about it. You just get a pamphlet dropped in your lap. And when you are mourning you get a call asking how much you want to spend to get your pet back. I was in SHOCK! All I wanted was my cat back, but in order to get her, they want an extra $400, BARE minimum. I don't know how these people sleep at night. It's the lowest of lows.
Negative experience: STAY AWAY! Our whippet visited to have 2 picture wounds treated. It was a non urgent so they keep her at the clinic for 10 hours while they worked on more urgent cases. Picked up at 11:00pm with a bill of $2300. Zero compassion just outright greed, other patients were being charged more then initially quoted while we were waiting.I understand it’s a business but there fees are unjustifiable bordering on criminal. Its obvious they try to milk every job for all it’s worth, TOTALLY DISGUSTING BEHAVIOUR. Their are lots of 1 star reviews with similar experiences which is really heartbreaking, hopefully if enough people call out this bad behaviour the owners will change their behaviour. The welfare of loved pets should come before greed.
Negative experience: bull sh from 8:30 till 2:30 pm
Fantastic experience: Accepts strays for surrender. Open on weekends. A+
Fantastic experience: We had the hard decision to put our cat Mia down after a unexpected medical episode. The care and compassion shown by all the staff was exceptional. They made a hard night more bearable. Thank you all especially the young lady vet who assisted in Mia's passing.
Hi Heath, we are really sorry for your loss and glad we were able to help at this difficult time. The GAE team
Fantastic experience: A special thank you to your hospital. On Sunday 8th June we attended you clinic with our dog Jake the service by all your staff was fantastic, but unfortunately we had to return the following day as our very special little fellas condition worsened and the new diagnosis was not good. We had to put him down. This is just a acknowledgement of the superb service your clinic gave us from original phone calls on both occasions to the quality from vets and reception. Thank you for your superb help in our stressful time. Kind regards Wendy and John Newton.
Hi Wendy and John, we are so sorry about your loss but pleased we could assist at this difficult time. All the best, the GAE team.
Positive experience: Edit: We had another visit in 2025 and had a very different experience. Vet was able to see our rabbit reasonably fast, and was more interested in their care and open to talking it through. They may not have been a rabbit specialist but they were helpful. A very different experience to our 2023 visit. Thank you for helping Fergus Original review below A terrible place to go for rabbits. Gut stasis case left waiting for hours, partially because one vet didn't want to see our pet due to 'allergies' and told staff they'd get another vet who sounded like they had their plate full in surgery see him, but then it was that vet who saw us anyway after we queried the extensive wait (yes, the walls are thin and conversations carry into the waiting area). More time spent looking at what expensive tests to do (when the other vet was free) than at our actual boy himself. So we stopped, and went into one of the emergency vets in Melbourne, having lost 3 hours and stressed him unnecessarily. When we got our boy checked at CARE in Melbourne after midnight, the investigation, need for tests, and actual interest in his health could not have been different. We walked about with a comprehensive plan, management, medication, options presented to care for him, AND it cost less than what we were charged for 40mls of fluid. The attending vet in Geelong wanted to charge $2750 for tests that were not deemed necessary by CARE because a simple physical exam was enough to narrow the diagnosis. If the available vets weren't prepared to, or comfortable/competent in seeing our boy, we wish we were told upfront. We wouldn't have had to arrive home at 4am. Never again. James B
Fantastic experience: We attended emergency last night after going to our normal vet who couldn’t stitch our dog up until Monday. I had been stressing all day so decided to take her in to get it fixed up at emergency. The vet we had was amazing she made me feel at ease as I knew she knew exactly what needed to be done and explained in great detail everything. I felt confident leaving my dog with them and she was in safe hands, I was happy they where going to do a light sedation& local instead of a full as she is getting older as our normal vet didn’t mention that as an option. Everyone talks about pricing but the price we paid compared to what we were quoted at our normal vet was very reasonable and I feel so much better knowing she is now all stitched up sooner rather than later, I felt if we left it another day it may of been even harder to get it stitched up so I’m glad I took her in. Thank you to all the vets and nurses for taking such good care of our beautiful girl.
Hi Fauve, thanks for the great review and we are really pleased we could assist in such a practical and efficient way. The GAE Team
Negative experience: Absolutely deceived and hurt by these people and what they’ve done ,who play on emotions and pretend to have your pets' best interest at heart when, in reality they don’t care, all they care about is making money off you my poor 1year old fur baby has just been put down this Thursday due to a undiagnosed condition, we pushed for brain scans but due to her age they said no and “not necessary” and to keep her medicated “up the dose till it works” we placed her in there care over night and she came back terrified aswell as her condition had deteriorated, that mighty she was put down unfortunately, my heart aches When I called the vet to tell them how the situation was going and she was being put down they said and I quote “thankyou for telling us ,bye” no compassion what so ever as they claim to be , anyone reading take your fur baby’s anywhere but here!!!
Fantastic experience: Thank you so much to the lovely vet (whose name I can't recall, apologies!!) who attended to our dog Disco overnight. We were very impressed with her thorough approach, her reassurance and the education she gave us regarding reverse sneezing. This vet has a beautiful bedside manner especially for us worried owners. The vet nurse was most reassuring and kind, too. Thank you all for your compassionate care. Karen, Tom and Disco .
Hi Karen, thanks for the lovely review. We are so pleased we could be of assistance. The GAE team
Fantastic experience: The staff are wonderful and always helpful. My only wish was that they'd join the "Gap Pay" system for pet insurance so you only had to pay the gap after a 5 min wait after claiming. This scheme has been in operation now for several years and there is really no excuse for not being part of it now. A vast majority of vets in Geelong are taking part on Gap Pay system and it's maybe time to ease the financial stress of people with sick animals and insurance so they don't have to come up with the full bill up front. Please look into Gay Pay - on checking, about 90% of Geelong Vets now do this. I know Gap Pay doesn't work overnights but at least it would help some people. Thanks for looking after Charlie my Labrador!
Hi Craig, thanks very much for your review and for bringing up GapPay. We do use this system in our Melbourne teams and with our new move to 24hr/7day operation at GAE we are actively considering introducing it. Watch this space. Thanks, the GAE team.
Negative experience: If I had my chance again, I would take my dog absolutely anywhere else other than this clinic. My heart aches knowing I left my dog in these peoples 'care," and he passed away in this disgusting "hospital." Absolutely deceived by these people who play on emotions and pretend to have your pets' best interest at heart when, in fact, all they care about is making as much money off you as possible. Presented my dog here after he was bitten by a snake, and he was already partially paralysed as it had been over 8 hours since the bite. The two options we were given were anti-venom at a cost of between $3000-$5000 or euthanasia. We asked to take him home, in which we were refused. After the vet could see I was visibly upset and having a panic attack, she "kindly" offered another solution where they would monitor my dog until 9pm and provide him with pain relief, in which we could then make a decision on whether we wanted to proceed with euthanasia. When I went back in a few hours later and saw my dog (he was now in a much worse state than when we first got there), she brought up the anti-venom again. When I asked for a quote for one dose, the price was now $1175. I can not stress how disgusting this practice is. They had a chance to save my dog when he was first presented and still partially mobile and tried to milk absolutely every cent they could out of me with an abhorrent price. When they knew my dog had no chance of surviving, they then gave me the actual price, knowing I would pay as it was significantly more reasonable. He didn't survive. I'd love to understand how the quote changed from up to $5,000 to $1,200? No doubt in my mind, they tried to make as much money as they could off me in the meantime. My dog could still be alive and here with me if it wasn't for the disgusting, greedy nature of this "hospital." This was literally a matter of life or death, and they absolutely tried to make as much money off us as possible rather than caring for my dog. I spend every single minute I'm wondering what could have been and if my dog would still be alive if they had actually given me proper information and costing from the beginning. I couldn't take my dog home because they had a "duty of care," but all they did was rort me of whatever money they could. There is no duty of care here. You do not care for the animals presented here, only money. On top of this, I was charged over $600 more than quoted even though my dog passed away hours before the time we paid for them to monitor him until. We are awaiting a response via email for a refund and will no doubt present our case to the Vet Practitioners Registration Board in the hopes no one else will have to deal with the pain my family and I are dealing with after having lost our beautiful dog here. Please, if you have any other option at all, take your pets elsewhere. I wish I had my time again and I could take my dog as far away as I could from here. Don't be deceived by their apparent kindness. All they care about is taking every dollar they can from you.
Fantastic experience: Our pet bunny needed urgent help today and vet Rod was fantastic, the girls at the desk were so friendly and I'm so grateful they helped us out.
Fantastic experience: I took my 18-year-old cat in there today with a massive lump on his face wobbly legs and not doing very well with the stark were amazing the vet was amazing and took wonderful care my cat and my family who were all very emotional they di d exceptional care of us all and thankfully he's doing okay as a huge abscess a heart murmur and possible vertigo but his home and he's happy and that's all I can hope for
Fantastic experience: Went to GAE after a horrible experience at Greencross Werribee hospital. Leah the vet was so nice and super helpful. Listened to all our issues with our little dachshund. I couldn’t thank her enough for reassuring me on how he was and what we needed to do to make sure he was okay and got better quickly! We couldn’t thanks Geelong emergency enough!
Fantastic experience: Cannot thank Annabel in reception and our vet, Leah, for the care they gave our doxie. We had attended the emergency vet at Werribee and were turned away for reasons often given but never able to be substantiated. After a thorough examination and xrays we were able to bring him home, pain free and with easy to follow instructions. Of course there was a cost, as there should be given the time of day, but the service provided was first class! A reminder that pet insurance is a must for our special friends!
Fantastic experience: Thankyou to Geelong Animal Emergency for your caring support when l brought my boy Jet in last night after a dog had bitten him twice at a Newtown oval. We were admitted straight in to receive the treatment necessary. Jets wounds were stapled however he has possibly sustained permanent damage to a muscle in his upper leg. The ligament has been torn from the bone. I cannot thank the clinic enough.
Hi Janine, what a traumatic experience! We are really pleased we could be of assistance to you and Jet. The GAE team.
Fantastic experience: Thank you to all the wonderful staff for looking after us. Kelly went above and beyond for our family when we had to put our beautiful Millie to sleep. I can’t imagine this job is easy, but everyone’s care and compassion towards our family was very appreciated.
Hi Christina, thanks for the kind words for our team at this difficult time for you and your family. The GAE team
Fantastic experience: Thankyou to John and the team at Geelong animal emergency for taking such good care of my little dog Honey, John is such a lovely compassionate vet and he managed to ease my worries over a stressful situation and my dog came home the same day feeling much better so thankyou guys again!
Fantastic experience: Absolutely beautiful and caring people. Our beautiful girl was having seizures. We travelled all the way from Ballarat, as there was no vet open after-hours. They were so caring. Unfortunately our beautiful girl received her wings last night. I couldn't recommend them more. Thank you
Hi Jay, we are really sorry for your loss but glad we were of assistance at this difficult time.
Positive experience: I very much appreciate the hard work that the vets do. However, I feel that they did not investigate my dog's condition as thoroughly as they could have, especially since she had internal bleeding. She was discharged early this morning after being provided anti-nausea medication. She died several hours later. I just wonder if more could have been done to help prevent her death. My local vet seemed to have done more for her in her final moments. Some other animal patients who were also in poor condition were not seen at all; one was in a lot of pain but provided no relief. I just hope that the vet team benefits from learning of the outcome that I have experienced and can work on improving their service.
Fantastic experience: Really friendly staff. Vets work quickly and are very thorough. Found the price to be quite reasonable given the out of hours visit.
Fantastic experience: The staff are nice and friendly, and the help and support we received was fantastic. So thankful that the team were able to help save our cat. In the nicest way possible, I hope I don’t have to go back, but if we need help again we know where to go.
Fantastic experience: We lost our boy Tully on Monday, the compassion and respect shown to us and our boy was amazing. We were a mess but the vet stayed with us and let us say goodbye. We’re still devastated but knowing he was taken care of right until the end gives us a sense of peace. Thank you for your kindness <3
Fantastic experience: Thankyou to the kind staff and vets for doing their best for our boy. Sadly he was too far gone for anything more to be done. We were given time to be with him with supportive staff, with music playing and kind words as he went. We’ll be forever grateful. And to the staff member cuddling and kissing him as we were led into the room, Thankyou.
Hi Zoe, thanks for your kind words, our team really appreciates them. We are really sorry for your recent loss. The GAE team
Negative experience: Unbelievable experience we sat there for 3 hours only to do a 5 min conciliation to be told we should think about putting (Maloo) our 17 year old cat down yes you could say I’m not happy!!! We had already spoken between ourselves and decided that it was time to say goodbye to her because we don’t think she should suffer the stress of this so it was a complete waste of time and money going there and then the hit ya with a bloody bill for doing absolutely nothing!! I can’t believe an Emergency Hospital can leave a animal (cat) stressing in a waiting room with dogs and strang people for 3 hour’s!! Sorry NOT GOOD ENOUGH!! Now we have to go through it all again tomorrow at another Vet!! Sorry WE WONT BE BACK!!
Negative experience: We had to bring in our beautiful cat for euthanasia after she quickly declined following a prolonged illness. Positives: Lovely staff - we called when we were on our way in and they made sure a room was immediately available that we could walk straight into. They brought in a bed and blankets for her and gave us as much time as needed - they even let us bring in her brother (they were litter mates and heavily bonded) so he could better understand what had happened. We never once felt rushed and staff were very kind, especially Dr Natalka. Negatives: We had called earlier in the day pre-empting this possibility and asking for a quote, as it was still early on Saturday and we potentially may have gone into our own vet rather than wait it out to see how things went. It was explained that the cost would be dependent on what after-care service was requested. I explained we would want a private cremation and to get her ashes back. I was told this would be roughly $500 and then we would need to pay the cost of whichever urn/receptacle we wanted. We paid this initial amount on the day, and then a few days later we received a second invoice for approx. $400… far higher than anticipated for just a wooden box! We discovered that the cremation charge was actually not included in that initial cost, hence the large second invoice (we didn’t receive an invoice on the day, so we had just presumed that we had been given the correct information verbally). I called to query this and was treated like a bit of an idiot, without an apology or any kindness, just a “well that shouldn’t have happened” with strong undertones of clearly not being believed. Thankfully we could absorb the unexpected costs, but that's a big chunk of money, and can be the difference between being able to afford food that fortnight or not. If it’s this easy for miscommunication to occur, or your staff are (understandably) not as well-versed as you thought on the many different price estimates, maybe ensure you provide invoices and a written explanation regarding costs involved? The hefty extra bill and interactions afterwards left a sour taste in our mouths after what was otherwise a positive experience (given the circumstances). A real shame, but we're glad our girl is at peace and not suffering. Note: The above feedback was provided directly via private email to the clinic when paying the further fees. They replied regarding the payment, but completely ignored the feedback provided (despite stating on their receipt that they value all feedback and suggestions). Honestly, this was the icing on the cake that brought them down a further star in my review.
Hi Stevie, Thanks for your feedback. We are pleased we could help at this sad time and that you were happy with the veterinary side of the service. We are currently working on improving the clarity of the cremations with our secondary supplier for this service as it can be confusing. I acknowledge that the communication was not perfect in this situation and we apologise for that.
Negative experience: Veterinary review: Our visit was marred by the vet's unacceptable behavior. Her rude and harsh demeanor, coupled with intrusive questions about our financial situation, created discomfort. When we refused overnight care due to our dog's separation anxiety, she responded poorly. It seemed that financial interests took precedence, as evidenced by the exorbitant charges. The vet's inquiry into our financial affairs was inappropriate and unprofessional. The vet asked if we wanted our dog to die there or at home. I said home definitely asked if my dog was going to die she said no. Why would you ask a question like that especially when you've come in to get help with your dog. My dog is as good as gold today. She didn't need overnight care. I feel it was all about the money.
Negative experience: Very over priced ! All they care about is money not the animal. They jump to conclusions and to extremes that cost the most. I went to another vet an problem was solved by a simple injection which cost me only 180. This clinic charged me 800 for a check up and a ultra sound an told me I needed the operation which is 6k! Ridiculous. They need to lower there prices instead of taking advantage of being the only 24 hour clinic open pretty much stealing from us at vulnerable times.
Negative experience: My stud silver fawn whippet was hit by a car, had to have his back leg amputated. I've had the unfortunate experience of them been lazy vets that obviously have no common sense and instead of taking skin from somewhere else, they cut his balls off.hes a STUD!! Would recommend these guys ever to anyone.
Negative experience: $6000 for a c section… disgusting. My partners Mum had booked her dog in for a c section at her vet which quoted her $2000, reasonable. Unfortunately the dog went into labour early and on a Sunday when all other vets were closed. They’ve left her without choice, and refused to let her take her dog home until full payment was made. Cannot believe the justification for that price, and the total disregard for peoples circumstances. No payment plan option, just corruption. If you have any other choice, just wait until your bet opens, or better yet, drive them to an emergency vet anywhere else, even Melbourne.
Hi Rea, We are sorry to hear that your expectations of cost did not align with what we could provide. That price is unfortunately the cost of providing the out of hours service, and I do hope you can understand the difference between this and a planned procedure during the week. It would be a reasonable exercise to look into the cost of the same procedure at a Melbourne emergency centre. On the other points, we do have payment plans via third party providers and we strongly push back on your notion that we are corrupt. We are privately run and do not receive any funding from another agency. We wish your partner's mum all the best and hope the new mum and puppies do well. The GAE team
Fantastic experience: The team at Geelong Animal Emergency where amazing with our 6 yr old whippet "Luna". Can highly recommend this place for your 4 legged best friend
Positive experience: I am lucky enough to say that the staff have been so good with my tough decision. Thank you for your time and helping me make sure that my beautiful baby tiger is safe and sound. R,I.P Tiger DOB 09/10/2023 DOD 29/07/2024
Negative experience: A aged friend of mine bought his dog in for medical attention. He was quoted an astronomical figure for surgery or the choice to put the dog down. He argued for quite a time to take his dog home and seek a 2nd opinion the next day. Clinic tried to hold the dog citing welfare concerns and reported the man to RSPCA. His dog was eventually allowed to return home and an alternate vet charged half the amount. Other examples here of similar situations. The dog is well. This clinic is abhorrent.
Positive experience: My elderly parents were there with their little dog from about 9:30am Saturday, I joined them at about 11. They got good care but when it was decided that a CT and (likely) surgical opinion would be needed the only real option provided was for us to drive up to Melbourne! Being sure there HAD to be a nearer option, I started googling and ringing other Vet hospitals. By 12:30 I had spoken to GARS in Newtown, had the referral and file sent over and had us all over there by 1pm!! With such an amazing service like GARS less than 5min away, I simply cannot comprehend why the vets at Geelong Animal Emergency didn't point us to them themselves rather than suggesting our only option was MELBOURNE?!?!? Disappointing does not even begin to cover it!
Negative experience: If I could give zero stars I would. My dog swallowed 2 fish hooks, one hook had to be removed from osephegus and other in stomach. How can this business justify a bill just short of ten grand to remove them, when my dog doesn’t have cancer, or need spinal surgery- they run their “hospital“ like a “Business for profit only” with little care for the affected family or dog. Be sure to do your homework and take your animal somewhere else!!
Fantastic experience: Amazing service that we are so lucky to have here. When our dog got sick and we took him there they acted so quickly and gave us great advice. From this and through follow up testing which they recommended, we sadly learnt that our dog had a very aggressive tumour in his gall bladder. We have since managed to have that removed and he's now on chemo with hope that we can fight this cancer. Because of their speedy actions we were able to catch this cancer early enough to give us some hope. We cannot thank the superb staff at this clinic enough for contributing to the collective effort in our dog's early diagnosis ❤️
Hi JJ, we are so pleased we could be of assistance and all the best for the ongoing cancer treatment. The GAE team
Fantastic experience: The team at GAE were all absolutely amazing when we took our senior dog for late night emergency care and CT scans the following day. From the nurses at reception, the vet, the specialist vet, everyone was very friendly and they took their time to thoroughly assess the situation. Your pets are in good hands at GAE!
Fantastic experience: A fantastic service thank you so much for being there.
Fantastic experience: Took our dog Chip in tonight after he developed a bad cough. Staff are amazing and very helpful. They seen us very quick too. Thanks for all the work you do!
Fantastic experience: Lovely staff that despite the hour are lovely and warm. Very professional and clear with explaining medical jargon. Makes a stressful situation a lot easier. I’d give 6 stars if I could.
Fantastic experience: I don't normally write reviews but wanted to thank the nurse and vets at Geelong emergency for treating our two dogs Quinn and Mya overnight. They were amazing in starting treatment early and keeping us updated and a smooth handover to the local vet. Sure it's costly but I'm happy to pay for their skills and care out of hours.
Fantastic experience: Lovely care, very thorough and super easy to get into.
Negative experience: I feel like I have wasted my time and my empathy for animals because I asked for help with a baby Possum, no bigger than the size of my first, that I had found in the middle of a footpath and they told me to put it back under a tree or a shrub. I did this. Now it's dead. Why do I bother caring..?
Negative experience: I rescued this baby Possum, placed it in a box with a towel and took it home. Then I called Geelong animal hospital and they said i should put it back. So I did.. Returned to check on the possum in the morning. It's dead now. Woeful advice. Clearly just didn't want to help. How sad..
Hi Tom, We are sorry to hear that the possum didn't make it. It is widely accepted advice to always replace a possum back to where they were found as it gives the best chance of a good outcome. Unfortunately the statistics for possums that have been transferred to another location are very poor. It is an upsetting outcome, but the advice is sound based on lots of research when caring for Australian fauna. I wonder if you would consider withdrawing your one-star review, as we felt we gave appropriate advice regardless of the sad outcome. Thanks for considering, the GAE team.
Fantastic experience: The staff here were amazing, so lovely and kept me up to date with how my fur baby was doing after surgery.
Hi Emily, thanks for your lovely review. We are so pleased we could assist. The AVC team
Fantastic experience: Immensely grateful there is this service AT ALL. Sure it is expensive but 24 hour care is not cheap! They have helped my dog twice - once got hit by a car and second time ate grapes. Professional and quick service. Price tag hurts but you can't help when your dog gets sick and sometimes it is out of hours. The reality of having a pet.
Hi Carla, We are really pleased that we could be of assistance. The GAE team.
Fantastic experience: I don't understand any of the negative comments on this site. The brilliant, compassionate team that work here go above and beyond in their role. Bought Sally in last night for a non emergency and was seen within less than 10 minutes. The clinic was very busy, but all staff were efficient, friendly, amazing, knowledgeable. Can't thank you guys enough!
Hi Nat, thanks so much for your lovely review - we really do try hard! Thanks for acknowledging that and we are really pleased we could be of assistance. The GAE team
Fantastic experience: A massive thanks to the guys at Geelong Animal Emergency, last Sunday they looked after our Zeke till the end and were so caring and compassionate with him and us. It's so tough losing a treasured family member and these guys made it easier. Thanks so much
Fantastic experience: Fantastic team! Last night we needed to take our cat, George, into GAE as we thought he had a very serious problem and we were all so worried. We had the lovely and knowledgeable Dr. Rod look after our George, and thankfully he was able to explain what had happened to George in great but easy detail and could treat him so we could take him home the same night! Highly recommend for all your pet’s emergency needs
Hi Brigette, thanks for the lovely review - we are so pleased we could be of assistance. The GAE team
Negative experience: I’m sure this vet has done amazing things for people but when my doggy was passing it wasn’t like that at all. My dog was extremely sick and needed help immediately we showed up 10 minutes before opening and they refused to see her until they had “opened” Even though doors were open and people were standing around doing nothing. For the surgery they told us it would cost $7,000 we decided to call our vet and ask about it (mind you we would’ve paid the $7,000) when we got in contact with our vet she said that price was ridiculous and that they would do it for &1,200. Sadly our girl didn’t make it through the night and there wasn’t anything that could be done but while we were in the waiting room there was a woman with her pug, they told her the surgery for her dog would cost $5,000 and she cried saying how she wouldn’t be able to afford it so they said “best thing for her is for you to put her down then”. It breaks my heart to think if she had of called somewhere else they could’ve done it for a price she could afford. I’ve heard the same about this vet multiple times. Even if they know your dog is going to die they will say “keep them here and we will monitor them” knowing there is nothing they can do just so they can get money for the stay. Ridiculous hurts to think how many more people they have done this to
Fantastic experience: Stress free caring good people. Professional
Hi Adam, thanks so much for your review of your services. We are glad we could assist at this busy time of year. The GAE team
Fantastic experience: We had to bring our puppy in after he severely damaged one of his teeth, causing a lot of pain and bleeding. Despite it being a busy Saturday night, the staff could not have been more calm and compassionate. Our puppy is now completely back to normal. Thanks so much for your help GAE.
Hi Tim, thanks for the great review. Saturday night can be a bit hectic, so we are really happy we could assist. The GAE TEAM
Fantastic experience: Had to rush my girl Lily in last night, she had toxicity from eating something she shouldn't have and I want to Thank the Vet we saw (apologies I don't remember his name) I was very stressed. He was fantastic. Calm, patient and kind and was gentle with her. The receptionist/nurse was great also. Thank you both. Today Lily is back to her normal self.
Hi, we are so pleased we could help in this stressful situation - great to hear that Lily is back to normal. The GAE team
Fantastic experience: Visited with my dog on a Sunday with limping issues, was promptly seen by the team at Geelong Animal Emergency. Wonderful friendly veterinarians and staff who took great care in my dog and his well-being. Just a reminder, as it was an emergency/ after hours service, it did cost extra than a regular consultation, apart from that, highly recommend bringing your furry friend here in the event of an emergency or when you need an after hours appointment.
Hi Tash, thanks for the great review and we are really pleased that we could assist on the weekend. The GAE team
Negative experience: I rang at 10pm my dog was struggling to deliver her puppies she had 4 from 645pm I got told to ring again before midnight as they didn’t have phones after that time at about 2am we decided to drive in were she delivered another one in the car all sacs where broken as she pushed them out lovely vet gave her oxytocin & an ultrasound told me to wait with her in the room my dog was quite distressed by all this 4 more were delivered there & vet told me the ultrasound showed 2 more but they where fine & to go home & ring or go back at 10am if nothing further happened my dog was in great distress with all this we went back at 9am again a lovely vet who told me needed an emergency ceaser but I would be better going to my own vet as it would be cheaper we made contact with my vet who told me to come in straight away she had an emergency ceaser which was not straightforward as she had ruptured 2 puppies were able to be revived & 1 was dead I got told another hour & she would have died. Due to all the green & black mucus in her. I feel that Dakota should have had the emergency ceaser at 2am we would have been able to save that puppy as it was we paid $560 for first visit then another $135 I told my vet there has to be a better service for Geelong at night as no vets do emergency care I have since found out we could have driven to Melbourne & got ceaser In middle of night for less than all that I have paid at a vet that we have used for ceasers before I assumed they were like Geelong & not available after hours lesson learnt though I am very lucky Dakota is still with us & it will be a very slow recovery for her .
Negative experience: GAE took every cent they could off of me and left me with a (still) very sick cat (that has now been euthanised) and no real solutions or information. Because he wasn’t ‘actively trying to die’ (direct quote) they did not give him the level of care one would expect for such a premium price. Every time there was a handover with different staff I was told new/different information, and was not given a clear picture of what was going on even once. The terminology they use is manipulative and makes you feel as though you have to shell out thousands of dollars or your pet will die. They are quick to bring up euthanasia. I then had to seek a second opinion and further care because they could not provide what my cat needed because they ‘don’t have enough money to play with’ (another quote). It took me calling and complaining to even get an itemised bill sent to me when I had already asked for one and wasn’t given one upon discharge. Im sure the response to this will be ‘sorry you had this impression of our clinic’, as they’ve answered other reviews, as if it is my fault I’ve had this experience and there will be no apology for their behaviour, only how I (justly) felt about it. I’m here to say it’s not my impression or opinion, it’s just fact. If you care about your animals then you’ll save money driving to an emergency clinic in Melbourne and getting them proper care rather than taking them here. They will prey on vulnerable people and change up their prices constantly, knowing that most people would pay as much as needed for a critically ill pet they clearly care about. These people do not care about your animals, only your wallet.
Fantastic experience: I want to give a special thanks from the bottom of my heart to Dr Kate. I brought my sweet dog in as she was in her late stage of kidney failure. Dr Kate was the most understanding , compassionate and empathetic veterinarian I have ever met and I have met a lot in the 16 years of having my dog. I found so much peace and comfort when I talked to her about what was next for my beloved dog. If you could tell Dr Kate, Coquette went in peace today at home in our arms. Thank you for your kindness truly. I will never forget you.
Hi Marianne, thanks for such a heart-warming review - it is the most difficult part of a vet's job. We will pass on your message to Kate and we are so pleased we could assist at this difficult time.
Fantastic experience: Please read my very honest review re my recent experience with Geelong Animal Emergency I am so overwhelmingly pleased and so thankful for the team here. I rushed my dog in to be assessed last week. He was extremely uncomfortable and I knew intuitively that something was terribly wrong with him. He presented to the front counter. I expressed my concerns and shared his symptoms. In less than 30 mins, our Sunny was anaesthetised, urgent X rays showing the worst scenario, Bloat. I signed all relevant consents and he was immediately operated on. Kate spoke with me frankly, and kindly. I was of course distressed but was told he was in the best hands for this life saving procedure. From here I received constant communication from vets and nurses, around the clock. They were always knowledgeable, respectful, kind and personable. Dedicated throughout. True to their word, they were in touch always. The aftercare has also has been second to none. Big thanks to Kate, John. Mahayla, Emily and Jen, and everyone who was there along the way. Our Sunny boy is healing so well now at home with us. We are so blessed to have this team on board for any emergencies or care outside our regular vet hours. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Michelle Stavenuiter x
Fantastic experience: LEGENDS ... would never go anywhere else for my dogs cruciate this is the 7th dog we have had done with Sam and the team and everyone of them has been successful with our dogs going on to live happy, healthy lives, l would never trust just anyone to do this specialised surgery unless l knew 1st hand how good they are and this Team are not just good they are perfect
Fantastic experience: I have visited several times with my bulldog, including several overnight stay to monitor after surgery. I am always impressed with the level of care from everyone at GAE include reception, nurse and vet staff. The team are always attentive and caring towards my dog and very informative and reassuring to me as his owner.
Hi Emma, thanks for the great google review - we are really happy to be able to assist with your Bulldog - what a funny breed!. The GAE team
Fantastic experience: Absolutely wonderful help Vivian
Fantastic experience: Never met a more dedicated, kind, compassionate group of vets and nurses. They provided regular updates and offered support and comfort when our beautiful, boy Oscar passed away.
Fantastic experience: Looked after us on the Sunday reasonably priced and lovely staff.
Hi Justin, thanks for the great review. We are really pleased we could assist you today. The GAE team
Positive experience: The staff are quite friendly, but they are a lot blunter than I’m used to. They are also extremely expensive (circa 2-3 times what I’d pay at my local vet), so if the issue can wait until your local vet opens, that is probably a better option. Unfortunately on this occasion we had to say goodbye to our Maltese terroir that we’ve owned for 9 years. She had hemorrhagic gastro, which although it can usually be treated, due to her having a variety of other very serious health problems that we only just found out about from the blood test they did (the two main ones being severe kidney & liver failure), we had to make the difficult decision to put her down as even after spending a few days in hospital to treat the gastro, she would’ve only had a few painful weeks left before succumbing to kidney failure, which couldn’t be treated.
Negative experience: DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG HERE! Been before and absolutely horrible service and then again public holiday comes and we have to choice but to bring him here again!.. They gave my dog medication for “gastro” which has caused his eye and whole face to swell and they will not see him again without me paying consultation fee after already spending $400 to see him and give him a few tablets, tablets which have now caused other issues Such a joke they do not care about your animals they care about MONEY! As for Reception lady wow! Haha Get a god damn heart how dare you laugh at me on the phone, absolutely unprofessional and heartless you do not deserve a job with animals! Your one heartless nasty piece of work
Negative experience: Did fix the issue with my dog and the vet nurse was excellent but the billing was extremely expensive and communication around how expensive it was going to be was very poor. Left the place feeling like I had been thoroughly ripped off. They know people love their pets and charge outrageously because of it.
Fantastic experience: Saw Kelly the vet on Easter Sat with our poor miniature dachshund Daisy who had a horribly swollen, bleeding eye. Kelly quickly diagnosed it as poisoning from rat bait causing the bleeding. They started her on Vit K and Daisy is recovering well. We are so thankful to Kelly and the whole team at Geelong Animal Emergency who were clearly inundated with sick animals as the only vet practice in the whole region open over Easter. Despite how busy they were, everyone was kind and professional. Thank you so much. Andrew & Daniela
Hi Andrew and Daniela, thanks for the great review on Google. Our Kelly and the team are really pleased they could be of assistance to Daisy. The GAE team.
Negative experience: The original scammers! The games they play with pricing is unbelievable. Do not take your pets here. They are not here to care for your animals they’re there to rip you off and make up fake ailments and exaggerate issues. Absolutely disgusted with everyone there from the reception to the vets. If you’re quoted something it will definitely go up when you feel like you have no choice but to accept. Shame on you all. The dishonestly is unbelievable.
Fantastic experience: We took my boy Ted to the emergency yesterday afternoon, after his breathing became very challenging for him and the nurse, I'm so sorry I didn't get her name, rushed him straight in, within minutes he was on oxygen, sedated and on a monitor. Only once was he comfortable did they worry about paperwork. It was a very worrying time for us, but the staff here were nothing short of incredible. They kept up up to date with his progress and thankfully we picked him up at 2 o'clock this morning. I really can not thank every member of staff enough for the care and attention they gave my boy.
Fantastic experience: I want to say a big thanks to Dr David Hall of Advanced Vet Care and the veterinary staff of Geelong Animal Emergency who cared for our beloved Black Lab, Jack (our fur son), on Friday 7 February. Because of a wound to his mouth several weeks ago, Jack developed an abscess near his jaw which caused him significant pain when he opened his mouth beyond that necessary to sip water. As a result, his food had to be mashed so he could lick it up without pain. Intermittently, he would unwittingly open his mouth too much and get a sharp, unexpected pain - episodes like this and the constant background pain from the abscess, contributed to him becoming depressed and fearful of food and the places where was when he got these sharp pains. It was a very distressing situation for him and us, his parents. Well, with care and expertise, Dr Hall located and treated the troublesome abscess and today, a week after his surgery, he returned to the dog beach he grew up on, where he could run and swim free and unrestricted with all his mates. His excitement at his new found freedom from pain was palpable - he was literally shrieking for joy, as we were! So, thanks David Hall and all the staff involved - we are so grateful and relieved we still have our darling Jack.
Hi Allan, We are really pleased we could be of assistance to Jack. David and the GAE team.
Fantastic experience: The staff here are amazing, especially after hours team! We appreciate your help so much for our pup last night!
Hi Hayley, thanks very much for leaving a review for our team. We are really happy we could be of assistance out of normal hours for your pup. The GAE team.
Fantastic experience: We were @ Geelong Animal Vets tonight, and from the initial phone call to arriving @ the Vets and we were meet by the wonderful nurse and the Vet Natalka were all so caring, empathic, kind and helpful, Thank you for your wonderful assistance. ❤ From Charlie and his grateful owners
Negative experience: Very unsatisfied and highly disappointed with the service. Our Cat suffered vomiting and loss of energy and we decided to give Geelong Hospital a go. She was admitted overnight and was discharged the next day, we got calls about fees and charges every couple of hours, but after discharge and a bill of $3200, there was no diagnosis or treatment. At no point we were told the amount was excluding the deposit we already paid. Our Cat became worse after getting home and started throwing up brown liquid through her mouth and nose, became even more lethargic and her condition got worse. Our local Vet picked up a blockage straight away and we had to rush her to another Hospital. For a Hospital to not have picked this up after numerous blood, urine, ultrasound and X-ray was shocking. I am not sure what they charged me for but I am very unhappy with the service.
Fantastic experience: Two visits in three days and both were great experiences. On Saturday, I found an injured Magpie which they unfortunately had to euthanise. What was impressive was the customer service, care for the animal and the follow up. When you hand in an injured wild animal, you’re given a quick info sheet that advises that you can call back 12 hours post drop off to enquire of the status of the wild animal. Tonight, one of our cats had thrown up bile (not unusual for her) and we’d noticed that the flowers I’d bought my partner had been partially eaten. On inspection, they appeared to be lillies which I understood to be highly toxic. I called ahead and asked if I could bring the cats down, along with the flowers for ID to which they welcomed. When I arrived, I showed the woman behind the counter the flowers and she said she thought they were fine but she’d check with the vet. Not even 5 minutes later she’d returned with the good news that these were not the type of lillies that are toxic to cats. (When we got home we did some more research and found they were Peruvian Lillies which are not toxic) Sorry that I didn’t catch the names of either of the women that helped me out on both visits but they were both phenomenal. It gives me great peace of mind to know that this clinic operates so close to home.
Fantastic experience: My dog Monty had to be rushed to emergency today. They looked after Monty so well and caring . Recommend them highly.
Hi Shan, thanks for the positive review. We are really pleased to have been of assistance. The GAE TEAM
Negative experience: Absolutely disgusting , if you like being told that your only choices are to Euthanise or spend thousands of dollars then this is the place for you, nothing wrong with my pet still got told to Euthanise him, really Appalling service!
Fantastic experience: Rod looked after our puppy and did a stellar job! He had an ulcer on his eye, and it had sealed shut. Three days after treatment it is fully recovered
