Fantastic experience: My family have been bringing our pets here for over a decade, and we have received nothing but extraordinary care, compassion and excellent experiences with Blakehurst Vet. We tragically had to put down our family cat Shadow (over 18 years old and had gone to this vet her whole life!) and received just such an unbelievably kind and compassionate amount of care from Dr Catherine and her team. Fantastic experience: Dr Hamish Bathgate and his team at Blakehurst Vet have been taking excellent care of our cat, Felix since 2008. Testament to the extremely high standard of veterinarian care received, Felix is 18 years of age and Dr Hamish has advised us recently that Felix is his third oldest feline client. Dr Hamish can’t talk to the animals like Dr Dolittle but comes very close with his knowledge and expertise on cats when treating Felix. Our cat enjoys seeing Dr Hamish. When Blakehurst Vet has been closed Felix doesn’t like seeing vets at other practices and reacts by hissing, fluffing up and carrying on going berserk. He was even barred from a vet at Peakhurst for attacking staff members. Felix was one of the first client’s at the palatial animal accomodation centre, The Hotel For Cats which we highly recommend. We believe taking our pet to Blakehurst Vet over many years has greatly attributed to our cat, Felix health, well being and longetivity. Great work Dr Hamish and your team at Blakehurst Vet. You guys do a superb and thorough job giving excellent care and looking after our cat.

Positive experience: I appreciate that the vet was able to correctly identify and verify the issue, and the problem we came in for has been resolved. The follow-up care was also adequate and appreciated. However, I was disappointed that when I asked the vet to clearly list out the current symptoms and any ongoing issues my dog is experiencing, the request was overlooked. As a pet owner, having a clear understanding of my dog's condition is important for both peace of mind and proper care at home. It would also be helpful if a brief report could be provided after the consultation for reference.

Negative experience: Traumatic experience for Potato – a two year old Golden Retriever, who had acute diarrhea and severe vomiting: Potato has been with Blakehurst Vet since he was born and received his first vaccination there. On Monday morning, Potato had acute diarrhea (bloody diarrhea) and was vomiting non-stop. We rushed him to Blakehurst Vet around 12 PM on Monday. After a brief examination, we were told he needed to be hospitalised overnight. We were assured by Catherine that Blakehurst Vet could treat him overnight and that there was no need to transfer him to a veterinary hospital. Throughout the day, we received only two phone calls from the clinic, both solely about cutting Potato’s fur. They emphasised that a large amount of hair would need to be removed because it was covered in blood and vomit, and told us, "He might look a bit ugly when you take him home tomorrow." We trusted that cutting his hair was absolutely necessary and important for his treatment, so we agreed. It turned out to be the most regretful decision we’ve ever made. Potato’s beautiful fur was cut and shaved roughly—on his legs, chest, and neck. It was clear to us that it had been done carelessly. While we understand that some hair near his rear might need to be removed to avoid skin irritation from repeated cleaning, shaving everywhere should not the first option that should be considered. Meanwhile, we received no updates on Potato’s condition, no information on whether he was improving or getting worse. It wasn’t until I finished work around 6 PM on Monday that I called the clinic myself to check in. Only then did they inform me that no one would be in the clinic after 7 PM. If we decided to leave Potato there, he would be unattended overnight. He would still be on fluids, but he was not improving and still had a lot of bloody diarrhea. We were told the estimated cost to transfer him to a 24-hour hospital would be around $1500 for the night. At 6:10 PM, I finally got his information. The nurse also told me I had less than 10 minutes to make a decision—if I didn’t call back before 6:20 PM, they would assume we had chosen to leave Potato there alone for the night. With no hesitation, we decided to transfer him to the hospital. All our family members rushed to the clinic, worried they would lock Potato in by himself. We managed to take him to the veterinary hospital, but then received a call from the clinic saying our other car was locked inside their yard because the gate was closed. We had no choice but to return the next morning to pick it up. Again, there was no communication beforehand while we were there. Before I called at 6 PM, no one from the clinic had informed us that they wouldn’t be providing overnight care. We were led to believe—based on what Catherine said—that they were capable of hospitalising and treating Potato overnight. In the end, we transferred Potato to the veterinary hospital, paid two consultation fees, and paid for initial treatment twice. We spent over $900 at Blakehurst Vet on top of thousands of dollars at the veterinary hospital for two days of care. I discussed it with Hamish the second day, and the attitude I got was “maybe we could handle that better next time”. -- That wouldn't erase how terrible this experience was for Potato and our family both financially and emotionally.

Fantastic experience: Staff were friendly and helpful. Received some good advice from the vet in respect to feeding, desexing, pet insurance and socialisation. The advice given by the vet was most appreciated.

Negative experience: Was told would no accept an injured stray kitten as it's their policy. Great care for animals. Had reported it to the council and was told to take it to the closest vet as it needs medical attention.the RSPCA was disgusted in your behaviour.

The staff are extremely welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable and you can tell they absolutely love what they do and are true animal lovers. I brought my cat here and they completely put my worries at ease, Dr Hamish was very calming and took great care of my girl. They even have a sweet little cat boarding service and the animals looked very happy and content! The staff here really care, after our appointment they took the time to follow up with me and make sure everything was okay. Location is so convenient with parking out the back so you don't have to worry about transporting your pet, and booking is a super easy and convenient process. They are upfront and clear in their pricing and extremely reasonable. I've even had to bring injured wildlife to this clinic and the staff has always been welcoming. True animal lovers, they care for our domestic animals as well as our beautiful native wildlife. We will definitely be back! Thanks so much to all the wonderful staff

Negative experience: My cat had a fairly extreme looking allergic reaction to anaesthesia and medications during their desexing operation last Friday. It was extremely difficult to get any clear information on the medications they gave him although I did get this sent to me about 4 hours after repeatedly requesting it, minus clear details around the anaesthesia charted and how it was administered. My partner tried to phone the vet for clarification as I was quite upset about the delays in getting this essential info. The vet nurse and vet also refused to speak with him to clarify what anaesthesia he was given. He was really calm and polite about it but they wouldn't even talk to him. I have to really rate SASH Alexandria though, they'd treated the allergic reaction as best they could with no information from the vet, and eventually the vet had sent them the same partial medication info and they inferred that the most likely cause of the reaction was the Meloxicam being injected into his skin by mistake instead of into the subcutaneous area. It's great to get this kind of clarification, but I had to go to another vet for it. I really wish I'd read the other one star reviews before bringing my pets to this vet practice. How people deal with mistakes they make, how they treat people who raise concerns - in this case in a mean spirited vindictive and completely dismissive manner from the looks of things, it tells you a lot. These vets are totally fine, unless they do anything wrong at all in which case they will almost certainly not acknowledge this or look after you or your pet's best interests. An apology? Forget about it.

Fantastic experience: The staff at Blakehurst Vet are very friendly & helpful. They contact me when my fur baby is due for her vaccinations. I love that the vet is genuinely interested in the well being of my pet. I think they’re awesome.

Negative experience: My dog got intoxicated by a piece of meat in the park, but they listed colitis on the invoice instead of mention that he has been intoxicated . When I called to request a correction, the person on the phone was rude, stating they couldn't amend the invoice only because my insurance didn't cover it. I simply wanted the truth about my dog's condition on the invoice. It was my first visit, and I won't be going back; it seems reasonable to expect an accurate representation of what happened to my dog on the invoice. Answer: Is not true that you've submitted to my insurance that my dog ingested something because I've called them, you wrote the name of a disease which is not what my dog had! I gently asked to include that in the invoice. But it seems is too much to ask and my insurance won't cover me because you decided to write something else on the invoice. Thank you anyway!

Fantastic experience: Dr Catherine was very lovely and took the time to hear what was wrong with my dog Charlie, she was careful and respectful towards him which helped as he is afraid of going to the vet. She did a thorough check on him and was able to figure out what was wrong and proceed with the right treatment for him. Everyone was very nice and considerate towards my dog and did everything they could to make him feel comfortable. They also took the time to do a proper check and didn't rush it. Very professional and highly recommend them for your pets care.

Fantastic experience: Blakehurst Vet has been incredible with how they've looked after my dog and made sure we were at ease leaving her in the hospital and providing support once she came home! All of the staff have been amazingly kind and compassionate! We couldn't ask for a better vet for our dog! Dr Hamish has been so assuring and Lulu was so well looked after by all the staff!
