Fantastic experience: Highly recommend Cairns Veterinary Clinic! I can go into long detail about our 14 yr old doggo that was treated by a vet on Bruce Highway, what a rip off and on top of it said it was okay to put our dog through a mouth cleaning procedure even with a severe heart condition. Completely ignoring the fact that she's on a multitude of medication for her condition. After acknowledging she's on level 5 of the heart condition chart. I realised money is their passion not animals. Do your research because if you search them in the northern beaches you will see who they are. Read those reviews! That day I swore he will never see us again. Exactly 7 weeks later she deteriorated with her heart condition and I arrived at this vet. Dr Jemima was FANTASTIC, accurate in her knowledge, supportive of our girl and what we were going through. She helped our baby onto palliative care and she was a happy old girl for another two weeks. When we returned another Dr. attended to us and as hard as it was I felt supported by her and everything was around the comfort of my doggo. We even received a card in the mail with her paw and nose print, with the most beautiful message. I will never be able to explain how their empathy, knowledge and professionalism has made this very difficult time easier. On top of it all, the cost was truly reasonable considering what we have forked out over the past 2 yrs at this horrible vet!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you want true value, empathy for your pet and you not to mention honesty and a fair buck. My other 3 pets will be taken there without a doubt.

Positive experience: Professional & generally good service & good advice. I feel my little fur baby is looked after well. Depends who you see though. I did have one bad experience with a male there, therefore will probably make sure I don't see him again! The women tend to be more caring, gentle & attentive

Fantastic experience: This was my first visit to Cairns Veterinary Clinic, and I was extremely impressed by how accommodating and professional the staff were from beginning to end. Every part of the process was handled smoothly, with no fuss at all, even with my reactive dog (AM STAFF - KAOS). It’s clear that a lot of thought has gone into their systems and procedures, which gives me great confidence in the level of care they provide. I feel very comfortable having my dogs stay here, knowing they are receiving the highest standard of care.

Fantastic experience: Had a wonderful experience with veterinary professional Dr Richard yesterday he was extremely gentle and kind with my dog Puddy and gave us lots of advice which was gratefully appreciated. Just a check up and annal vax and for once Puddy was not sick after her visit. Can highly recommend Richard and his team to anyone looking for a vet in the Gordonvale area this is the only place to go (I have attended the other option in the area and cannot recommend them sadly).

Negative experience: If you are looking to take your pet here, DO NOT!! The whole experience was absolute BS.. They only care about money and are the most unprofessional and lying people you will ever meet. I don’t know how they are qualified My mum took my dog there as she was limping and her legs weren’t working well. She came at 6pm and they said they are closing soon and will need to pay a $500 deposit out of an $800 bill. Money hungry that is absolutely ridiculous. You only ask for that sort of deposit if it’s over 3k. They said she needs to stay overnight .. more money.. then as soon as they opened in the morning she was ready to be picked up?? They said her bloods were fine and they handed some inflammatory medication. They insisted we put her down. We decided to get a second opinion and take her to the vets in Redlynch where they had her for 2 hours, they told us immediately her bloods were high and concerning, they told us it was an infection and gave us antibiotics and sure she will recover. Only $200. Massive difference. Absolutely shocked by the disgusting assumptions from these guys, imagine telling someone to put there dog down when it was a very easy fix. Money hungry and careless. Absolutely useless and full of bs assumptions and lies. Don’t take your pet here, they won’t be honest and will only want your money or tell you to put it down because they don’t know what they are doing at all. This place should be closed or sued, absolute disgust. After complaining I got a $300 refund out of $800 payment for NOTHING! No help, most useless people to exist - I want my $800 back that I paid for nothing . Time to be exposed and accountable for your actions. No denying you guys have done terrible work and made very false assumptions and telling us to euthanise our dog so you could make more money. So disgusting! A vet should have their animals interest at heart, not money. Maybe you guys should find a job in Church and learn some morals Go to Redlynch Pet Hub, they are kind and caring and will give you an answer and help straight away and not charge you carelessly.

Thank you, Sorayah, for sharing your feedback regarding your pet’s visit with us on the 4th April. We completely understand how stressful it can be when your pet isn’t feeling well, and we're sorry that your mother’s experience did not meet your expectations.
To clarify, your mother called us at 4pm on the 4th April advising us that she’d pulled a tick off Jooles the previous day and she wasn’t eating or walking well and was breathing funny. She had some difficulty with transport and requested a home visit. We advised that we would need to see Jooles at the clinic as a home visit was not possible. We advised her of our opening times of our Gordonvale clinic as well as the Pease Street clinic and also mentioned the 24/7 emergency clinic if she was unable to get to us before closing. At this time your mother also mentioned that she wouldn’t spend too much on Jooles treatment.
When Jooles came into the clinic at 6pm, she was examined and it was found that she was very painful and lame on her right fore limb and was barely able to stand and take a few steps. She had a painful lumber spine, right hips and pain in both stifles. She was also examined for a tick paralysis and no tick or symptoms of tick paralysis were found. Her temperature was mildly elevated at 39oC. We discussed these findings with your mother and recommended blood tests were taken. All costs were discussed with your mother and agreed to at the time of the recommendation. It’s unfortunate that we have to ask for deposits for all treatments but this policy was introduced after multiple incidents of non-payment by pet owners in the past.
During the consultation, we gave Jooles a pain relief injection intravenously and improvement in Jooles condition was noticed instantly by your mother and the veterinarian. The bloods were taken and run and the results were normal except for a mild neutrophilia which indicates a stress leukogram. The blood test results did not show a left shift which usually indicates infection so antibiotics were not medically indicated. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) currently poses a significant global health threat and we do not prescribe antibiotics that are not needed. We discussed the results with your mother and advised that we suspected that Jooles condition was related to pain and on the basis of the test results, additional pain relief was given. At this time, we also discussed keeping Jooles in overnight as she would need reassessing the next day. Your mother agreed to the overnight stay due to her home location and the difficulty and stress of the transportation on Jooles. We advised we would reassess her in the morning and if going well we would discharge her. Due to the time of day, numerous staff members stayed late to ensure Jooles received the treatment she needed.
At 8am our vet reassessed Jooles, she had eaten overnight but was still ataxic on all 4 limbs and collapsing on urination. She was also still painful on her right shoulder and right stifle. Her temperature had reduced to normal. We called your mother to discuss Jooles treatment and recommended further diagnostics were performed including x-rays and an MRI. This was declined and it was decided to trial conservative treatment which consisted of take home pain relief for 7 days. At this time, we also discussed euthanasia IF Jooles quality of life became poor. This type of conversation is always difficult to hear but please know that the health and well-being of the animals in our care is always our top priority, and at times, euthanasia can be the best option for their wellbeing and comfort.
We can understand it can be difficult to gain understanding when you are not present for the consultations and discussions but hope this provides you with more information on Jooles treatment.
We are glad that Jooles is now feeling less painful and her condition is improving.

Fantastic experience: Dr. Richard and the team at both the Cairns and Gordonvale clinics have cared for my girl for many years, right up until the end of her life. We first came to them after our previous vet struggled to find a solution for her ongoing health issues. After just one appointment, she was on a new food and a low dose of medication, which solved our problems almost instantly. They’ve been there for us every step of the way, providing exceptional care. When cancer took over her body and there was nothing more we could do, they ensured she was comfortable and happy. And when the time came to say goodbye, we felt fully supported and reassured by them. The team handled everything with incredible empathy and care, and I am forever grateful for the kindness they showed us during such a difficult time.

Negative experience: My dog was attacked by another dog. He had some wounds on his leg went in there and asked to be cleaned up and some antibiotics. The vets professional opinion was his leg was broken and put under to be cleaned and x-rayed!! clearly could see the leg was not broken and he could jump into the car. He repeated that was his professional opinion. 3.5 grand please. I said no clean the wounds and some antibiotics. Try to pull my heart strings and talk utter rubbish to me. I said go get cleaning stuff. I'll show you how it's done. Vet said it your choice. He did end up cleaning the dog wound and did a very good job gave me antibiotics and painkillers. The dog was better with in hours Full recovery within daysThe bill went from 3.5 grand to $300. unprofessional racking up, the bill for an x-ray putting the dog under when there was clearly no needed do do that for a flesh wounds. Borderline criminal and this behaviour needs to be stopped by All vets.

Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding your visit with us on December 27th, 2024. We take the well-being of every pet in our care very seriously, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to clarify the details of Bruce’s examination.
During his assessment, our veterinarian identified multiple deep puncture wounds and small lacerations on both of Bruce's hind legs and perineum, which were discharging purulent fluid. Bruce was clearly in pain, and his left hind limb showed signs of moderate swelling, with him also limping and crying out in pain during the examination. Given the severity of his injuries, we recommended x-rays to assess the extent of any underlying damage, as this would help us rule out fractures or other complications such as ligament damage that if missed may cause chronic lameness. We felt it was essential to ensure Bruce’s comfort and wellbeing, and not recommending these exams would have been negligent.
To properly treat his injuries, we recommended a general anaesthetic to facilitate both the x-ray and a thorough cleaning and stitching of the wounds. Performing these procedures without anaesthesia, including the cleaning and flushing of the wounds, would have been incredibly painful and distressing for Bruce.
To clarify, the estimate we provided was at a cost of $2500, reflecting the complexity and extent of his injuries. This estimate included costs to perform and maintain a general anaesthetic, 4 x-rays of the hindlimb, antibiotic and pain relief injections, fluids to maintain his hydration whilst he was under anaesthesia, an Elizabethan collar and the stitch up and cleaning of the wounds including the consumables and surgical kit that would have been required. It also included the cost of a course of antibiotics and pain relief to go home with.
We appreciate your perspective but our priority is always to recommend the best course of action for your pet’s health and wellbeing. We hope this clarifies our approach and reasoning, and we are here to discuss any further questions you may have. Thank you again for trusting us with Bruce's care.

Negative experience: Just a concerned cat mom who thought something major was wrong so I called to ask if I could come in and get my cat checked they said yes. Thank you for sharing your feedback regarding your phone call with us on March 24th. We completely understand how stressful it can be when your pet isn’t feeling well, and we're sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations.
As we were fully booked with appointments at the time of your call, we advised you to come in immediately so that a nurse could assess your cat. After further consideration, we decided to refer you directly to the emergency vets, as we felt your pet required immediate attention. Please know that the health and well-being of the animals in our care is always our top priority, and at times, emergency care is the best option for their safety and comfort.
We truly appreciate your perspective and will review our communication to ensure we provide clear and compassionate guidance in the future. If you have any questions or would like further clarification, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Fantastic experience: I've being to six different clinics in Cairns over the years.. this is by far the best experience I've ever had in a vet. My grandmother's chihuahua fell sick over the weekend and I called up looking for an urgent appt on Monday morning as our regular vet was fully-booked and recommended this clinic Amazingly, Kristy-Anne found time for us that day and whilst the news wasn't overly positive...Dr. Ellie was extremely empathetic, detailed in her assessment and crystal clear about our next steps. She is an absolute asset to your clinical team and I would recommend her to anyone looking for a compassionate and experienced vet Mostly importantly, it was AFFORDABLE for a retiree/pensioner and at no point did I feel like there was any unnecessary costs for my grandmother. 10/10 experience

Negative experience: Only care about money. We brought a pigeon with a broken foot to these vets. But unfortunately they didn’t really care about helping her but just about money. If we had brought a dog here or a parrot with the same broken foot they wouldnt have smiled and said we will take care of it and them murder them literally 5 minutes later!!! Before even giving you any warning or letting you take it to a better vet. With a dog a parrot or a person they would have tried to fix the issue. But since this poor pigeon was wild and they thought no one would care to pay for her recovery they just murdered her. I have helped in a pigeon sanctuary in the netherlands so I know what im talking about. Pigeons are very resilient and there are many pigeons with similar issues who could still live a happy and fullfilling life on the street without being in pain. Just like a cat or a dog or even a human would still live a good life even if it the injury was so bad that the foot had to be amputated. With a bit of care scar tissue would form over the wound and they could live happily again. The vets told me that if they did that than the pigeon would still be in pain and not live a happy life. And that this was a welfare issue. And because of that they had to put her out of her missery. But this is just not true. You can see when pigeons are in pain they limp and try to avoid standing on their painfull feet. Even with an amputation if that where neccesary wich it likely wasn’t. The pigeons with that amputation are not afraid of standing on that leg. So they killed the poor pigeon we found without any good reason. Or warning to us. We would have brought her to a diffrent vet if we knew how little these vets care about their patients. Rip poor Donna️

Dear Midas
Thank you for your feedback regarding your visit to our practice. At Cairns Veterinary Clinic, we treat approximately 250 wildlife cases each year on a pro bono basis.
On the afternoon of the 22nd of August, you brought to us a wild pigeon with a piece of string or cotton wrapped around its leg. Our experienced veterinarian examined the pigeon straight away to assess its injuries and ability to survive in the wild after rehabilitation. As the pigeon had extensive injuries and was unfortunately suffering, the veterinarian made the decision to humanely euthanise to relieve its pain.
We are sorry you did not agree with this decision but we are duty bound to follow the Code of Practice Care of Sick, Injured or Orphaned Protected Animals in Queensland Nature Conservation Act 1992
Regards
Jane

Positive experience: Sadly, I am looking for another service. My dog has been a regular and after thousand of dollars, and new problems following a major operation, I sought urgent treatment, was assigned a time days later and when I arrived 10 minutes late after a morning traffic hold up We were ignored, left wondering as people arrived after us to be hurried through, with no explanation until I asked and was told I could wait if I liked, as I had missed my appointment. No acknowledgment from vets or staff as I sat there. This from a service that can have you waiting for long periods after you do turn up on time. I was stressed, worried and late for work so I left. I have not received any inquiries about my old fella or whether he could come in at another time. My dog is the one suffering

Negative experience: Honestly haven't been to these vets but was just quoted $1300+ for a 4kg dog to have a general dental clean!! Completely outrageous! How can someone care for their beloved pet with an expense like that? That really is robbery and putting people in such a stressful position to keep their pets healthy up to standard. It's quite sad. It's just not right. Disallowing people who want to love and care for their animals but are quite literally unable to die to such an expense. It just doesn't have to cost that much! This is fact. $88 for a general consultation which is on the higher side. On the plus side, the woman on the phone was very polite.

Cairns Veterinary Clinic
Cairns Veterinary Clinic

Thank you for taking the time to give us a review Elle.
Unfortunately, a general pet dental clean isn’t as simple as it is for humans who can keep their mouths open and stay still. When pet dental cleaning is performed without a comprehensive oral evaluation, pets will often have dental disease which will go unnoticed and remain in pain.

Our complete oral health examination starts with a consultation with one of our experienced Veterinarians. A thorough examination of the pet and discussion of medical and dental history help us to work with the pet owners to decide the best course of action for their pet.
Our estimate includes pre-anaesthetic blood testing so we can ensure the risk of the anaesthetic is minimised and your pet is in good health.
We also include modern analgesic and anaesthetic protocols, catheterisation, intravenous fluid therapy and proper intra and post operative monitoring by our experienced and qualified Veterinary Nurses.
Equipped with a dedicated dental x-ray unit, we recommend and include in the estimate intra oral radiographs. Radiographs are needed so we are able to diagnose painful problems in your pet’s mouth that would otherwise be missed with visual examination and periodontal probing alone. Dental radiographs help us to determine whether teeth might be abnormal, missing, non-vital or malpositioned and able us to perform a thorough assessment of the teeth and surrounding soft tissues.
Dental plaque and calculus are removed from the pet’s teeth and complete ultrasonic scaling removing calculus below the gum line is performed prior to being polished to remove surface irregularities that decrease plaque retention.
Our complete oral health assessment also includes two post-operative follow up examinations and preventative dental care planning.
As discussed by our receptionist, we recommend you bring your pet in for a consultation before we give you an estimate of treatment costs so we can provide you with a more accurate estimate of costs, rather than just a ball park figure over the phone.
We understand that the cost of medical treatment is expensive and unfortunately, we do not have the luxury of Medicare for our pets. With this in mind, we do have payment plans through 3rd party providers available for our pet parents and some pet parents also find it useful to put funds away for these unexpected medical costs.

Fantastic experience: Hank- our boy Hank was the light of our lives, he was also a bit of a lemon. The entire team looked after Hank as if he was their own dog. When it became clear that Hank wasn't going to recover the entire clinic moved heaven and earth to do what was best for Hank and the best for us. Truely went above and beyond. The entire Team were just beautiful with us, Dr Abbey and Dr Richard, thank you for always giving Hank the very best. I wouldn't take my dachshunds anywhere else. xx Love A Parker. Fantastic experience: Our elderly dog Hank had multiple health issues in his last few years. I can't fault the clinicians and staff at this practise for their help with Hank. They provided top-tier care and treatment, detailed and regular updates, and when it was time for Hank to cross the bridge, they worked in with us so Hank could spend his last day at home and pass on there. Thanks Richard. I highly recommended this practise.

Fantastic experience: My Daughter & I were distressed about her elderly puppy so our visit was quite an emotional one. what made this clinic stand out from the rest as we had been twice to another clinic that carried out expensive tests etc but failed to pass on that valuable information to us and more or less left us to deal with a dying dog. From the moment we walked into the clinc the receptionist came straight over to help us. Helen the Vet, was tremendous - she examined our Dog & treated her straight away with steroids! Our Puppy returned the next day to Helen for further treatment. Our lil dog is up running around, eating & drinking & back to herself. Cairns Veterinary Clinic is now where we will take our furbabies for treatment in the future! Thank you Helen & team for saving our lil girl!

Fantastic experience: We just saw Richard for the first time and he has been outstanding. He has such a calm energy - puts both the furry patient and the humans at ease - and gentle, respectful manner - I'd recommend him to anyone and couldn't praise him more. So grateful we found an amazing vet. The reception staff/vet nurses were all outstandingly helpful and lovely as well.

Fantastic experience: We are new to Cairns and joined another Vet Surgery, however we and our dog were not treated in a loving manner and our friend recommended Cairns Vet Clinic The difference was amazing and we and our little dog were made very welcome. The atmosphere is caring and friendly and we were thrilled at the difference in our treatment and would happily recommend Cairns Vet Clinic to anyone looking for a Vet. Helen was very informative and our dog was most relaxed with her.

Negative experience: Between 2014 - 2018 when we had our 1st guinea pig attending this clinic, there were great people working there, real professionals. Very helpful, kind, caring and understanding. But after that we didn't like the service anymore, maybe we had guinea pigs that the vets didn't have the knowledge on how to deal with the issues. We were referred to another vet in 2019 and our first guinea pig died there on the first visit then just this year 2021, we brought our second guinea pig there and again referred to go back to the same vet that our first guinea had died there. Our poor guinea was given 2 injections, we came home then it died within 6 hours. My kids now decided not have any more pets because we don't know if pets will be taken care of when sick.

We are sorry to hear that Lillian passed away. Unfortunately, Guinea Pigs mask the signs of illness because in the wild, if they showed signs of illness, they would be easy prey for larger animals. This means that once they do start showing symptoms, they are always very unwell. Due to how unwell Lillian was, as with all medical conditions as was discussed, no treatments are guaranteed and survival cannot be assured. It’s for this reason we’ll often recommend you take them to a vet with further qualifications if their condition doesn't improve quickly. We are sincerely sorry for your loss.

Fantastic experience: I & my furr bebes have attended this practice for over 20 years & there aren’t enough stars to give this the rating it deserves. The care factor shown by all team members is exceptional. Procedures explained , investigations & results followed up thoroughly, even going above & beyond to explore further options. I wouldn’t take my dogs anywhere else & in those difficult times where there is only one option, saying goodbye, this is done with dignity, professionalism, empathy, which makes the grieving process easier to bear. Thank you to all the staff for the care you’ve shown me this year with Louie & Ted.

Fantastic experience: Have taken my dog there on a few separate occasions, they have made sure they have dealt with all the medical issues promptly. They have also ensured that I understand my dogs condition and treatment/s. A few days after the appointment I have always received a call to check that things are getting better. So I would recommend them to anyone with a dog (only cos I have only taken my dog there). Great genuine caring staff.
